Romanian Senators Oppose Providing High School Students With Computers

“The Ministry of Education asks you not to vote for this law. We believe it is more advantageous for students to use computers in the classroom, so that all the classes would benefit. We remind you that the ministry supports the purchase of computers destined for student home use through the Euro 200 program,” said state secretary with the Ministry of Education Oana Badea.

According to the Ordinance, every 9th and 10th grade student would be provided with a desktop computer to be used for home learning, returning it to the school after graduation.

“This initiative improves the quality of education, through the use of modern teaching and learning techniques, ensuring the flexibility of information sources, harmonizing communication between the main layers of the education system, and increasing the level of participation in the education process,” says the reasoning behind Emergency Ordinance no. 168/2008.

The Romanian Senate, the first Chamber notified, rejected the ordinance 50 to 19 votes. The ordinance is still pending a vote in the Chamber of Deputies.
