Romanian Soldier Dies In Afghanistan

A Romanian soldier from the 21st Mountain Hunter Battalion died Thursday in Afghanistan while on patrol, when the Humvee he was in ran over a makeshift explosive device.

Sergeant major Chira Claudiu was on a patrolling mission on highway A1 (Qalat - Kabul). Around 1330 GMT, approximately 50 kilometers off Qalat, the second Humvee in a convoy of five, ran over an explosive device, according to the Ministry of National Defens.

Following the explosion, sergeant major Chira Claudiu, severely wounded, receive medical assistance on site and was evacuated by helicopter. He died on the way to the hospital. Chira Claudiu was 30, was married and has been an employee of the Ministry of National Defense since 2002.
