Romanians In Mumbai Are Few, At Safe Distance From Attacks - Foreign Ministry

There are very few Romanians in Mumbai, India, and they are at a safe distance from the scene of terrorist attacks, Cosmin Boiangiu, spokesman for the Romanmain Foreign Affairs Ministry, told MEDIAFAX Thursday.

"From the information we have so far following talks with local authorities, there are no Romanians in the locations targeted by attacks, but the Romanian general consular office and the embassy are closely monitoring the situation and continue checks to see if any Romanians might be in the area,” Boiangiu said.

He added that from the Embassy and Consulate’s records, Romanians in Mumbai are few and are at a safe distance from the area where incidents occurred.

According to Boiangiu, Romania’s economic consul in Mumbai, who is also the head of the general Romanian consular office in the city, is safe with his family, though they are quite close to the blast scenes.

The ministry is currently considering issuing a travel warning for India and urges all Romanian citizens in Mumbai to contact either the Romanian consular office, or the French consular office, which has set up a crisis cell for European Union citizens.

A series of coordinated attacks hit the Indian capital of Mumbai Wednesday night, as gunmen carried out attacks across the city, killing more than 100 people, according to CNN reports.

Blasts hit two luxury hotels, Taj Mahal and Oberoi/Trident, as well as Nariman House, where Rabi Gavriel Holtzberg was taken hostage.
