Senate Rejects Bills Regulating Same-Sex Civil Partnership

Senators voted with a majority to maintain the specialized committee’s rejection reports for the two bills. One of them was initiated by members from both ruling coalition and opposition parties, while another was tabled by ruling coalition party ALDE MP Andrei Gerea and independent MP Ion Popa.

Under both bills, same-sex couples could enter a civil partnership, which would mark the first time non-straight couples would gain legal recognition in Romania.

The second bill also stipulates that each partner would have the obligation to provide for the other’s children, if applicable.

The bills will be sent to the Lower Chamber, which will act as a deciding body on the matter.
