The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it will continue its efforts to assist and repatriate Romanian citizens in Middle Eastern countries, stating that the authorities are monitoring around 16,000 citizens, of whom approximately 3,000 are requesting assistance.

Since the beginning of the epidemic of COVID-19 and up to this moment, 47 Romanian citizens abroad, 13 in Italy, 11 in France, 12 in the UK, seven in Spain, two in Germany, one in Belgium and one in Sweden have died, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) has announced.

The situation of Romanians in Italy will be discussed in the upcoming days by the Romanian and Italian interior ministers, said Romanian interior minister Dan Nica.

Romania ranks third among European Union states, after Spain and Germany, in terms of petitions submitted to the European Parliament.

Romanian authorities are not to limit Romanians’ right to free traveling across the European Union at the request of another EU member, as such restrictions can only be imposed by court orders, President Traian Basescu said in Madrid on Tuesday.
