Local police in Bihor county, western Romania, and the Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activity are investigating the theft of 73 kilograms of uranium ore from a storage facility of the National Uranium Company.

Police, Nuclear Activity Authorities Seek 73 Kg Of Uranium Stolen From Storage Facility In W Romania

According to local newspaper Bihoreanul, the disappearance of the radioactive material was noticed last Wednesday but authorities did not announce the incident publicly.

The investigation is currently led by the arms, explosive and dangerous substances department within the Bihor county police.

"We have been notified of the disappearance of radioactive materials from the storage facility in Stei. We are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident," said Adrian Bucur, head of the local police.

The case is also investigated by Romania's national Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activity, said Vajda Borbala, head of the institution.

Borbala added radioactivity of the missing uranium is insignificant, the newspaper reported.
