Five beaches on the Romanian coast received the international „Blue Flag” certification in 2026, awarded for compliance with standards regarding water quality, environmental protection, safety and services offered to tourists. A sixth beach is preparing to obtain certification.

The beaches in Romania that obtained the „Blue Flag” label this year are:

• Axxis Nova – Năvodari
• Phoenicia – Năvodari
• Azur – Eforie Sud
• Citadel – Eforie Sud
• Phoenicia Blue View – Olimp

To grant the certification, 33 general and imperative criteria are evaluated, organized in four areas: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, as well as security and services, the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism announced on Tuesday.

Dharma Beach in Eforie Sud is in the pilot phase of the program and is preparing for the 2027 edition. During this period, the operator must meet all the necessary criteria to obtain international certification.

The fact that a beach is in the pilot phase does not mean that it already has the „Blue Flag” status, but that it is in the process of preparation and evaluation for eventual certification.

The international „Blue Flag” program was initiated in 1987 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), with the objective of rewarding beaches, marinas and pleasure boats that comply with high environmental standards and promote sustainable development.

In Romania, the program has been implemented since 2004, and the annual evaluation of the criteria is carried out by the national jury, with the participation of central public authorities and representatives of tourism associations.

Certification is granted for a certain season, and its maintenance requires meeting the criteria in subsequent years. Therefore, the list of certified beaches may change from one season to another.

For tourists, the „Blue Flag” is an international indicator of compliance with standards regarding water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility and services available on the beach.
