Over 300 Taxi Drivers Protest In Front Of Bucharest Mayoralty

Over 300 taxi drivers rallied Wednesday morning in front of the Bucharest mayoralty, urging talks with general mayor Sorin Oprescu to solve the problem of transport licenses.

Victor Stan, head of the National Union of Romanian Drivers, said Wednesday that taxi drivers resorted to spontaneous protests, adding they expect Bucharest mayor to meet their demands targeting transport licenses.

In July this year, following talks between the general mayor and the officials of the National Chamber of Taxi Drivers in Bucharest and Romania, Oprescu decided to set up a Social Dialogue Commission in charge with solving the problems of taxi drivers.

On April 9, a total number of 70 cab drivers went on hunger strike in front of the Bucharest mayoralty, urging new amendments to the taxi driving law allowing them to receive the transport licenses already issued for taxi companies using rented cars.

Taxi drivers urged the authorities to amend the law regulating their activity so that the transport licenses that were granted to taxi companies be given to independent taxi drivers.

The protesters are displeased with the mayoralty’s granting licenses to taxi companies that now force independent taxi drivers to comply with their rules.
