Constitutional Court Rejects Lower Chamber Regulation Challenge

Romania’s Constitutional Court rejected on Wednesday a challenge against the Lower Chamber’s Regulation, brought forth by a number of 63 MPs.

The challenge referred to several provisions added to the Regulation in 2016, with the challenging MPs contesting, among others, several provisions which stop MPs who leave their parliamentary groups from forming or leading a new group.

The provision in question was considered “abusive and undemocratic” by the MPs, who also argued that chamber’s chairman should be obliged to summon normal or special chamber sessions if the requirements are met.

The decision comes amidst controversies surrounding the Pro Romania party, founded by former Social Democrat Party (PSD) Prime Minister Victor Ponta. The group gained more than a dozen MPs from the ruling party in the past couple of months, but was denied the status of a parliamentary group for the current session.
