European Commission First Vice-President: We Have Seen No Progress Since CVM Report

“I clearly said that I want to talk with representatives of the Romanian Government regarding the recommendations issued by the Commission in the CVM report. We want to ensure that there is progress in the Romanian justice system, we want to ensure that the fight against corruption will continue, because it is very important for the future of this country. My problem is that since we published the CVM I’ve seen no progress,” the EU official said.

Timmermans did not want to speculate on whether infringement procedures from Article 7 of the EU Treaty will be launched against Romania as was the case with Hungary and Poland, but said that Romania can use the CVM report and its recommendations to avoid such procedures.

The European Commission official was awarded a Doctor Honoris Cause degree from Romania’s National University of Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) on Monday, and is due to meet with Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila in the evening, in a second meeting between the two officials within the past week.

Dancila and Timmermans previously met in Brussels last week, with the discussions also revolving around concerns on Romania’s ongoing judicial reform.
