Parvulescu said that the accusations brought against him are part of a campaign to discredit the ProDemocratia Association, after the institution supported the promulgation of the law on the uninominal voting system.

Articles from the law on the uninominal voting system were questioned by the president who raised an exception of unconstitutionality regarding two such articles.

The president referred to articles 2 and 26 from the electoral reform law that he considered as infringing the Constitution.

The Court on Wednesday found unconstitutional several articles of the law introducing the uninominal voting system.

Parvulescu asked that political parties assume responsibility for the consequences of the Court’s decision. He wanted to remind people that the Democratic Party also supported the electoral system brought forth by the Association.

“It was suggested that I and the ProDemocratia Association are responsible for the unconstitutionality of two articles of the uninominal law that refer to the election of the members of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate. We have proof that the articles were also voted by 48 democrat MPs,” said Parvulescu.

Parvulescu added that the solution for introducing the uninominal voting system for 2008 elections would be to amend the two articles, either by means of a Parliament vote or by issuing a government emergency ordinance.

He accused democrats of being inconsistent with respect to introducing the uninominal voting system.

Basescu last week said he suspects the government and an association Pro Democratia to have worked hand in hand to draw up two unconstitutional articles in the electoral reform law.
