Vladescu reminded that the letter of intent to the EUR13 billion stand-by agreement with the International Monetary Fund stipulates the number of public sector employees must be reduced to a maximum 1.29 million until the end of the year, compared with the current 1.36 million, by sacking 70,000 employees.

The minister stressed he refers precisely to layoffs, as there are no more vacant positions in the public sector.

Early May this year, Jeffrey Franks, head of the IMF mission to Romania, said the number of public employees in Romania should be reduced by 250,000 people on the medium-term to match the numbers before 2006.

The IMF will only disburse the fifth tranche of the EUR13 billion stand-by agreement after the Romanian Government implements cost cutting measures.
