Florin Manole, the former Minister of Labor, talks about the conditions that the PSD imposes in order to vote on the new wage law. The Social Democrat has two expectations from this law: to satisfy all categories of public sector employees and to meet the milestone in the PNRR.

Florin Manole says what the Social Democrat’s conditions are for voting on the Wage Law. After months of deadlock, the parties are discussing this law again on Tuesday, at Cotroceni. The former Minister of Labor says that the future law will have to satisfy all state employees, in order to avoid a possible strike, but also not to exceed the proposed envelope, a condition for meeting the milestone in the PNRR.

„I believe that, in fact, the entire discussion must take into account two, not red lines, that it is not appropriate to use this expression, but two essential benchmarks both. One, the satisfaction of those who work in education, health, defense and public order, culture, public administration, local or central, in general of those who work in the budgetary system, on the one hand, and on the other hand, the ability to deliver these results depending on the budgetary availability of our country. The moment we have these two things together, I believe we are very close to a consensus”, declared Manole.

What expectations does Manole have for salaries in education

Florin Manole drew attention to the fact that in the current law, not all increases would be included in the basic salary in education. The former minister demands that the law also include the management increase, but also the doctoral increase.

„I said from the beginning that this increase is extremely important because it concerns many of the teachers in Romania and that reducing it or not granting it would lead to a loss of income. But in the end, with or without a management increase, with or without a doctorate increase, what interests those in all public systems is that income does not decrease,” the former minister added.

PSD wants salary increases, but without exceeding the budget envelope

The Social Democrats are also demanding compliance with the salary envelope. Manole says that the last option, agreed upon at Cotroceni by all parties in discussions with Radu Burnete, was 8 billion lei.

Failure to comply with this envelope would lead to a deepening of the hole in the country’s budget, but also to the failure to meet the milestone in the PNRR, the former Minister of Labor added.

„We are obviously happy if more financial resources can be found, once again, while respecting the limits that stem from Romania’s commitments to reduce the deficit, but it is a question that the Ministry of Finance will be best able to answer. The phased increase in salaries has been promised in the past, you know very well. This solution was also proposed by other governments, but it was not respected,” Manole also declared.

Nicușor Dan meets with the leaders of the former Coalition on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to discuss the Wage Law. If the reform does not pass Parliament next week, Romania risks losing an important milestone from the PNRR and 770 million euros, respectively.
