Cioroianu discussed with Mancini about the working-visit of the Romanian delegation led by Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu in Rome that is to take place on November 7 and 8.
The discussion also aimed towards the “Romanian-Italian excellent political and economic relations and the strategic partnership between the two countries.”
Cioroianu brought forth the measures taken by Romania after the tragic incident that took place in Rome, saying that letters were sent on November 5 to Massimo D’Alema, Italy’s minister of foreign affairs and to Franco Frattini, the European Commissioner for Justice.
“Withdrawing his previous statements on how to condemn criminals, Cioroianu said it is essential that Romanian citizens enjoy all the rights stipulated by the European Union for its members,” said a press release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. In this respect, Cioroianu said that Romanians should be allowed to appeal the decision to be banned further access on Italy’s territory.
The two officials discussed about possible cooperation strategies at the level of civil society between the two countries as well as about the need to identify programs, financed though European funds, to support the social integration of Romanian citizens who decide return in the country.
Cioroianu had previously declared that those Romanians who embarrass their country should be deported to the Egyptian desert. He afterwards apologized for his statements.
