Hundreds Of Romanians Rally Against Communism In Capital, Other Cities

Anti-communist rallies started earlier in the day in Romania's western city of Timisoara, the cradle of the revolution that overthrew communist rule twenty years ago, where social democrat presidential candidate Geoana, liberal leader Crin Antonescu, Sibiu mayor Klaus Johannis and Timisoara mayor Gheorghe Ciuhandu signed the "Partnership for Timisoara" agreement, whereby Ciuhandu pledged to back Geoana in the election runoff scheduled for Sunday, December 6.

Anti-communist protesters in Timisoara clashed with supporters of social democrats and security forces used tear gas to break them apart. People egged the screen in the city's central square, which broadcast the politicians' speeches.

Geoana's Social Democratic Party is seen as heir to the country's former Communist Party.

Romania in December marks the 20th anniversary of the anti-communist Revolution that left numerous civilian casualties and culminated with the execution of dictator Nicoale Ceausescu and his wife.

Tuesday's events in Timisoara prompted people in Brasov, Cluj-Napoca and capital Bucharest to rally in their cities' central squares and shout anti-communist slogans.
