"I assure you that now, just like in 2004, you can trust my words: I've won!" Basescu told his supporters in a speech.

He asked his voters to be "patient" until the votes have been counted and rest assured the final results will not fabricated, because the Central Electoral Bureau "is a team of people who must put out a correct result."

"I believe that, today, through their vote, Romanians have proven [Silviu] Brucan right. After 20 years of transition, we have learned everything about democracy," Basescu said, referring to political analyst Silviu Brucan's statement that it would be 20 years before Romania became a democracy.
