Romania Ctrl Bank Chief Sees Less Room For Further Rate Cuts

Romania’s central bank is bound to keep a prudent stance in the coming period, as the recent evolutions on the local and external markets give it less room for additional rate cuts, governor Mugur Isarescu said Thursday.

„The horizon for more (rate) cuts has narrowed, and so have the margins for maneuver. We must keep room for maneuver in response to any development on the local and external markets,” Isarescu told reporters at the presentation of the quarterly inflation report.

On Tuesday, the central bank cut its key monetary policy rate by a quarter-point to a record low of 6.25%. It was the fourth rate cut in 2010, from 8% at the end of last year.

The next monetary policy meeting is due June 30.
