Interior Min Vows To Ensure Free, Fair Presidential Elections In Romania

Romanian interim Interior Minister Vasile Blaga said Friday he will ensure the organization of “free and fair” presidential elections, stressing that he will noeither be President Traian Basescu’s campaign manager nor will he be part of the Democratic Liberal Party’s campaign staff.

Blaga said he will not amend any act regarding the elections already initiated by the ministry.

He said emphasis will be laid on the campaign meant to inform people of the consequences of casting multiple votes in the upcoming elections.

He said people's confidence in the ministry must be restored and pointed out that he also aims to render authority to decision within the ministry.

The Interior Ministry is the authority in charge with organizinga nd overseeing presidential elections to be held in Romania on November 22 and December 5, 2009.

The former head of the ministry and also former deputy-prime minister, Dan Nica, was sacked by Prime Minister Emil Boc, following his comments regarding potential fraud in elections, which were widely interpreted as an accusation that Boc's democrat liberals might try to cheat to get President Traian Basescu re-elected. Basescu, who has led the Democratic Liberal Party but who is now formally independent, has not yet said whether he will run for a second term.
