Italian Court Pays EUR45,000 To Romanian Brothers Wrongly Arrested For Rape

The two brothers, aged 23 and 24, respectively, had been arrested in September 2007 after an Italian prostitute reported that two Romanians raped her and robbed one of her friends.

Police searched the area and apprehended the two Romanian brothers, who had several wallets and jewelry on them. The victim identified them as her assailants.

Three months later, however, DNA tests ruled out the two brothers as being the authors of the rape.

Adrian and Gheorghe Nichitean were released from prison and they were granted damages worth EUR24,500 and EUR20,000, respectively.
