Lower House Eliminates Obligation To Teach Romanian History, Geography In Minority Languages

The proposal, by deputy Mircia Giurgiu, repealed section 8 of article 46 of Law 1/2011 on national education. The section said Romanian history and geography would be taught in the languages of national minorities in primary, secondary and high schools with minority language teaching, following the same curriculum and using the same textbooks as those used in classes taught in Romanian.

The proposal was adopted tacitly because the deadline for debates and vote - May 1, 2011 - had expired.

The house's committee for education had issued a negative report on this initiative, while the Government issued no position.

The Senate is the deciding house for this proposal.
