A 35 year-old man died Monday morning after he was beaten by villagers in Cetate commune, in the southern Romanian county of Dolj, when he was caught stealing wire from vines Sunday night.

Man Caught Stealing In S Romania, Killed By Villagers

Marcel Stoica, 35, and a friend were caught by locals stealing wire from vineyards at the outskirts of the commune. Locals hit them with farming tools and Stoica was badly injured and was found by police in a carriage abandoned outside the commune.

"We were alerted about the scandal via the emergency number 112 and police went to the scene. The victim was found in a carriage, at 5.30 am, outside the commune. He was taken to the Calafat Hospital, but died because of severe injuries," said Adrian Capraru, spokesperson for the Dolj county police.

Investigators on Monday morning started hearing several locals.
