The head of state also said he talked to the head of the European Commission on January 12, in Brussels, about Romania’s wish to obtain the agriculture portfolio.

Basescu stressed Romania also readies a backup variant regarding its future portfolio of European commissioner, although it clearly wishes to obtain the agriculture portfolio.

Basescu also pointed out that the most important aspect involving relations within the European Union targets the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.

According to Basescu, the agriculture portfolio is highly important in the fallout of future talks on agricultural policy in 2010.

He also told diplomats to take into account the fact that Romania backs the European Union's agricultural policy, despite voices claiming Romania’s farming sector contributes only 2% to the EU budget. Basescu pointed out this very percentage feeds the 500 million people of the European Union member states.

Prime Minister Emil Boc said Tuesday that Romania's former agriculture minister Dacian Ciolos is proposed for the position of European Commissioner for Agriculture, adding Romania has the support of France, Germany and Poland for this portfolio.

Romanian minister of foreign affairs Cristian Diaconescu said Monday at the hearing within the reunited commissions of foreign policy, that the evaluations show there are chances the future Romanian commissioner in the European Commission will obtain a “more significant” portfolio than the current one. Romania currently holds the multilingualism portfolio in the European Commission.

According to Diaconescu, the list of commissioner proposals will be approved with majority of votes by the European Council and the president of the European Commission.

The name of Dacian Ciolos – current head of the presidential committee on agriculture – has been intensely circulated by media in connection with the country's choice for EU commissioner.
