Romanian authorities decided to halt the program targeting to build new emergency hospitals and to look into the opportunity of upgrading existent hospitals, Cristian Anton Irimie, secretary of state with the country’s Health Ministry, said Saturday.

Irimie said the program would only be put on the back burner, not called off, in order to carefully analyze whether it is necessary, in the fallout of economic crisis that also affected Romania, to build new hospitals or simply upgrade existent units.

He also stressed workforce shortages are poignant in the healthcare sector, arguing authorities must closely look into the matter before making a decision in this respect.
