Romania ranked among the top ten countries in the E.U. by number of cattle and swine in 2007, the Romanian Statistical Institute, or INS, said Tuesday.

It said overall cattle herd reached 2.81 million head at the end of 2007, down 3.9% on year, placing Romania on the eighth position in E.U. countries, after France (19.12 million head), Germany (12.6 million head), UK (10.07 million head), Italy (6.57 million head), Spain (6.4 million head), Poland (5.4 million head) and the Netherlands (3.82 million head).
 
Romanian swine numbers dropped 3.7% in the mentioned interval to 6.56 million head, the institute said.
 
It said overall fowl numbers reached 82.03 million head at the end of 2007, down 3.5% on the year.
 
Romanian sheep and goat numbers, however, posted overall growth of 11.1% on year, to 9.33 million head, the institute said.
 
It said Romania ranked 4th in E.U. countries based on sheep and goat numbers in 2007, after UK (23.72 million head), Spain (25.06 million head) and Greece (13.91 million head).
 
The EU-27 livestock numbers continued to decrease in 2007, according to estimations in the field.
 
E.U. cattle herd reached 82.83 million head at the end of 2007, down 5.63 million head on year, while swine numbers dropped some 2.07 million head in the mentioned interval.
