Romania Leu Widens Losses Vs Euro, Exch Rate Hits 5-Mo Low At 4.3137

Romania’s leu extended early losses against the euro in mid trade Friday and the central bank’s reference lost 0.3% on the day to 4.3137 units, the weakest rate since early July.

Against the US dollar, the leu's indicative weakened 0.8% at 3.2581 units, from 3.2299 units Thursday.

Elsewhere in the region, the leu's peers were losing between 1% and 1.5% versus the European currency, following the greenback's appreciation amid growing concern that EU debt-ridden states might turn to foreign institutions for bailout.

The leu opened flat at 4.3 per euro, but started to lose ground shortly after, hitting an intraday low of 4.315 per euro.

At around GMT1100, the leu traded at 4.3135/4.315 to the euro.

On the money market Friday, overnight rates fell slightly to 2.8%-3.3% a year, from 3%-3.5% a year in the previous day.
