Romania PM Says Govt May Continue Education Law Adoption Through Confidence Vote

Boc said the procedure has been started and the opposition can submit a no-confidence motion if it wants.

The Constitutional Court, which published its motivation Friday to a ruling on the education bill, stated the Government's prerogative to seek confidence votes to adopt laws is not subject to any conditions.

However, the Court said the Government undermined the Parliament's attributions as legislator by seeking to adopt the country's education bill through a confidence vote and acknowledged the existence of a legal conflict between the two institutions.

Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana, of the opposition Social Democratic Party, said after the Court motivated its ruling that he would ask the prime minister in writing to halt the confidence vote procedure and allow the Parliament to continue debates on the bill. He said the Parliament's standing offices would decide the next step in case the prime minister refuses.
