Romania’s Former President Iliescu Doesn’t Believe Poll Results Overturned Before Seeing Final Results

Iliescu said the only difference between the first and second spot in voters’ preferences is psychological and he doesn’t believe exit-poll results will be overturned.

He said social democrats will still form a strong group in Parliament, as it did for four years in opposition, and the only issue now is negotiating the future Parliament majority.

"We’ll wait until all votes are counted to let the numbers confirm the idea that the Social Democratic Party is repeating its performance in 2004 and comes out on top. It’s likely results will be similar to those of democrat liberals. But I don’t believe things have been overturned until I see final results,” Iliescu said.

Romania’s Democratic Liberal Party obtained 34.67% of voters’ preferences for Senate, followed by the alliance of social democrats and conservatives with 33.36% and liberals with 18.18%, following the counting of votes in 71.06% of polling stations countrywide by GMT 0600, the Central Election Office said.

For the Chamber of Deputies, the same report shows the Democratic Liberal Party obtained 33.29% of voters’ preferences for the Chamber of Deputies, followed by the alliance of social democrats and conservatives with 32.51% and liberals with 18.10%.

Two exit polls Sunday evening showed the social democrats in the lead with roughly 36% of voters’ preferences, followed by democrat liberals with roughly 30% and liberals with roughly 20%.
