He added that does not entail his leaving the Social Democratic Party or the political scene.

Iliescu told MEDIAFAX he would have considered running for senator again had the old voting system been maintained. Under the old system, parties would make lists of candidates and votes were cast for an entire list of candidates.

“By myself, in a constituency – no matter where, I have no reason to compete in an electoral campaign,” said Iliescu. “This does not mean I’m leaving the Social Democratic Party or giving up political activity,” he added.

“I’m simply no longer interested in this competition. My presence on the candidates’ list would have brought an advantage to other candidates of the party,” Iliescu said.
