Romania’s President To Request New National Defense Strategy

"As president of the High Defense Council I will request a national defense strategy to deal with any threat against the state and its citizens, to effectively manage crisis situations and participate in international cooperation operations, including military missions," Basescu said.

Basescu said it is his duty to ensure Romanian's security by cooperating with NATO and the EU, and highlighted the necessity to strengthen partnerships with states that supported the country.

"An eloquent example is the support France provided so that Romania could obtain the EC agriculture and rural development portfolio," Basescu said.

Basescu said the partnership with the United States is central to the country's foreign affairs policy. He added that "a close partnership with the United States" brings Romania "security and stability, a guarantee the country's development will not be endangered by external forces."

Basescu said one of his future priorities is to support the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union.

In the speech delivered on December 20, 2004, when he was sworn in for his first term as the country's president, Basescu said he would include the fight against corruption in the national defense strategy.
