Romanian Deputies Reach No Consensus Over Prosecution Request For Ex-Minister

The committee agreed the anticorruption prosecutors’ request does not infringe human rights and liberties.

Failing to reach a consensus to make a recommendation for the Chamber’s plenary session or formulate a political viewpoint on the case, the committee decided to insert each parliamentary group’s point of view in the report.

The liberal group said deputies may not act as legal bodies, therefore they “cannot recommend a verdict on the request for prosecution".

The social democrat group said there are no elements justifying the prosecution of the former social democrat minister, adding the case is being politically exploited.

Democrat liberals were in favor of the prosecution, arguing there are elements backing the need for such legal action and Mitrea’s guilt or innocence can only be established within the legal framework.

Memebers of the far-rightist group of the Greater Romania Party were also in favor of prosecution, arguing the parliament’s attributions do not include the assessment of prosecutors’ evidence against a member of parliament.

Conservatives preferred to state a more technical viewpoint, saying that suspicions may be interpreted in favor of the alleged culprit, but hesitated to say whether they are in favor or against the prosecution.

The group of national minorities said courts of law are the only bodies that can establish Mitrea’s guilt or innocence, while the group of the Democratic Union Hungarians in Romania mentioned it does not express any point of view.
