Romanian Designate PM Calls For ‘Time Off’ On Teachers’ Pay Hike

Boc, expected to receive parliament endorsement on December 22, held an informal meeting with unionists and employers’ representatives.

The talks were attended, among others, by designate ministers Adriean Videanu (economy), Marian Sarbu (labor) and Constantin Nita (small and medium-sized enterprises).

Romania’s outgoing government recently postponed until April next year a parliament decision stipulating 50% salary hikes for education staff, on insufficient funds and potential devastating consequences for the Romanian economy.

The decision was declared unconstitutional, so the government has later issued a new ordinance stipulating a 28% salary hike for staff in the education system, to be applied gradually based on existing income.

During the electoral campaign ahead of the November 30 polls, designate premier Emil Boc said the first measure on the democrat liberals’ agenda would be to enforce the law hiking teachers’ salaries.
