Romanian Ex-PM Tariceanu Says Govt Coalition With Democrats Is Possible But Unlikely

Romania’s former prime minister, liberal Calin Tariceanu, said Thursday that if President Traian Basescu obtains a new term there could be a government formed by democrat liberals and liberals, but the alliance is unlikely given the “sad” experience previously gained in such an alliance.

Romanian Ex-PM Tariceanu Says Govt Coalition With Democrats Is Possible But Unlikely

Tariceanu told a press conference that the liberals (PNL) only exclude dialogue with extremist parties, adding that if Basescu is reelected president, there could be talks with the democrat liberals (PDL) and perhaps a new government formed by the two parties.

The former prime minister added, however, that such a move is unlikely and recommended that his liberal colleagues should not forget the sad experience gained alongside PDL and Traian Basescu.

"Yes, a government with the democrat liberals is possible but unlikely. We have had a very sad experience with Basescu and PDL. I would not recommend that this experience be soon forgotten. However, if we find a fair method of negotiation and talks on our principles, where we draw the line, any dialogue is possible," Tariceanu said.

In the same context, Tariceanu added Basescu and PDL are wooing the liberals in the outlook of a future partnership.

"Lately I have noticed chivalrous gestures, Traian Basescu and PDL are trying to woo us as future partners. At the Social Democratic Party, (Mircea) Geoana considers an alliance with the liberals as natural, for reasons that escape me right now. With PDL, the issues raised last year after the European Parliament elections remain standing. They will not have us as partners if they want to mock the Parliament, to turn it into an institution devoid of substance, because we consider the Parliament one of the pillars of democracy in Romania," the liberal said.

Tariceanu went on stating other conditions placed in talks with the democrat liberals should there be any dialogue for a new government after the presidential elections.

"With PDL, we will not accept the amendment of the electoral law by switching from the uninominal system to the majority system. In addition, it is possible the democrat liberals might force early elections next year - it is a project we will not join," Tariceanu said.

The liberal went on saying talks with the social democrats will not be different either, and there will be conditions imposed if a government coalition is desired.

The former prime minister concluded saying Basescu and caretaker Prime Minister Emil Boc need to go home, because this is the only way to end the political crisis.

President Basescu has said repeatedly he would prefer a right-winged government of democrat liberals and liberals, but would not assign a liberal prime minister, given his experience of the Tariceanu government.
