Romanian Far-Rightists To Take Senate Vice-Presidency

Vacaroiu said the agreement between the democrat liberals and the far-right Greater Romania Party regarding the positions at the head of the Senate, publicly announced Tuesday, ends the deadlock created by the disagreement between the Greater Romania Party and the Conservative Party.

Vacaroiu added the solution proposed by the democrat liberals helps overcome a “delicate” situation, seen for the first time in the history of the Romanian Parliament, which could not find a solution through the Senate Rulebook.

The Senate president mentioned he did not contribute in any way to the negotiations between the democrat liberals and the Greater Romania Party.

A list of all Senate Standing Office members will be subject to electronic voting in the plenary session held Tuesday afternoon.

In the same meeting, two new senators, Mircea Leontin and Traian Mandru, will be sworn in.

The democrat liberals will give to the far-right Greater Romania Party the vice-presidency of the Senate, a position that will be filled by party leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor. In exchange for the vice-presidency, the democrat liberals will receive the position of secretary within the Chamber of Deputies and Senate and the presidency of the Senate’s commission for economic matters.

The conservatives asked the Senate Standing Office, Monday, for the position of Senate vice-president, currently held by Vadim Tudor, to be offered to conservative Corneliu Pascu in this Parliament session, thus voiding an agreement previously concluded with the far-rightists.

In retort, far-right leader Vadim Tudor said the conservatives’ request is “a ridiculous endeavor” and the conservatives “are a bunch of imbeciles.”

Conservative Party president Daniela Popa said in the joint meeting of the conservatives and the social democrats that the conservative senators would even resign from Senate if the party does not receive the Senate vice presidency.

The Senate plenary meeting decided, Monday, that the conservative and far-right leaders would meet and negotiate until Tuesday, at 12:00 local time, a solution for the “denounced protocol” regarding the Senate vice presidency. This solution was to be voted starting with 15:00.
