Romanian Govt, Unions Reached No Compromise On Labor Code – Union Leader

Hossu, president of union confederation "Cartel Alfa," said many of the 107 proposed amendments to the Labor Code change the relationship between employer and employee, and between social partners. The unions also oppose the Government's plan to adopt the Code through a vote of confidence, rather than the standard parliamentary procedure.

National Union Bloc (BNS) vice-president Ioan Pisc also said Labor Minister Ioan Botis and Prime Minister Emil Boc refused to negotiate on any topic.

On Monday, unionists called for a general strike to start on the day President Traian Basescu receives the draft Labor Code and Social Dialogue Code, and said they will organize local protests starting with February 28.

According to the plan agreed upon by the leaders of the union federations affiliated with the five union confederations, protests in Bucharest will begin on the day the Chamber of Deputies debates the amendments to the Labor Code. The unionists will picket the entrances into the Parliament building, the headquarters of the ruling parties and rallies in front of local town halls and county halls, from February 28 until April 18.
