Romanian Int Min To Dismantle Dept Whose Chief Was Detained By Anticorruption Prosecutors

Romanian interior minister Dan Nica is at the headquarters of the General Intelligence and Internal Protection Department (DGIPI) whose chief, Cornel Serban, was taken into custody by anticorruption prosecutors.

Nica plans to dismantle the General Intelligence and Internal Protection Department and fully restructure the General Anticorruption Department (DGA), according to sources within the ministry.

The sources added a decision on the restructuring of DGA will be made in a few days.

The interior minister announced on March 15 the appointment of Cornel Serban at the helm of the General Intelligence and Internal Protection Department, who served as interim head of the department since February 15.

Serban, along Petre Pitcovici, head of the Operations Division within the General Anticorruption Department, and Ioan Alecu, former rector of the University of Agronomic Science and Veterinary Medicine were detained by anticorruption prosecutors Tuesday night.

According to a press release issued Wednesday by the National Anticorruption Department (DNA), Serban is accused of aiding a criminal, using and allowing access of unauthorized persons to private information.
