Romanian Labor Ministry Reorganizes Social Service Agencies As Depts, Cuts Staff

According to the ministry, the reorganization of the three agencies will also entail a reduction in the number of positions in their administrative, financial and public relation departments. Ministry representatives said the three agencies' specialized staff will be taken over by the ministry, adding the future departments' activity will not be affected.

Romanian MEP Norica Nicolai criticized mid-July, in a speech held before the EP Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, the Romanian authorities' decision to disband the National Agency for Equality of Chances (ANES).

The Romanian MEP said the Government's decision to list ANES among the government agencies that will be disbanded breaches the European principles on gender equality.

On July 1, Romania's Government adopted an emergency decree whereby four of the authorities subordinated to the Labor Ministry, including ANES, were transformed into departments within the ministry.

The ministry reorganization measure aims at reducing public spending, and follows the enactment of an austerity plan which cuts salaries and increases taxes.
