Romanian Lawmakers Acknowledge New Majority

The new parliamentary majority of over 65%, made up of the Social Democratic Party, Liberal Party, Conservative Party, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania and the group representing national minorities, said in the document that a government of specialists run by an independent prime minister is the only solution for the country at the moment.

Lawmakers also called on President Traian Basescu to withdraw the appointment of economist Lucian Croitoru for prime minister, as they refuse to endorse him.

"Lucian Croitoru cannot get parliamentary majority and continuing on this path means continuing the crisis at increased economic and social costs," the declaration reads, adding the majority of lawmakers call on the head of state to appoint Johannis prime minister.

Basescu last week designated Croitoru for prime minister, a proposition of the democrat liberals, and ignored the other parliament parties' nominee, Johannis. Croitoru has ten days to form a Cabinet and seek a confidence vote in Parliament to have it sworn in.
