Romanian Liberals Prepare To Submit New No-Confidence Motion

The Government, which survived a no-confidence vote in Parliament Wednesday, is seeking lawmakers confidence vote Thursday to adopt the education bill.

The Constitution states the opposition may not submit a second motion of no-confidence during the same parliamentary session if the Government is not toppled, unless it does so over a bill, political statement or governing program. The Constitution also states the opposition has three days to submit its motion.

Romania's centrist coalition Government survived a no-confidence vote in Parliament Wednesday, as the opposition's move only garnered 219 votes and needed at least 236 to pass and overthrow the Cabinet.

The vote in Parliament came as 30,000 people demonstrated in central Bucharest against the Cabinet's austerity measures that include pay cuts, tax raises and layoffs and as the International Monetary Fund is reviewing the country's progress under a EUR20 billion international loan agreed last year.
