Romanian Military Staff Compelled To Attend Missions On Foreign Theaters Of Operations

Under the current legislation, only soldiers and volunteer officers were compelled to attend missions outside Romania’s territory.

In July last year, Romanian Defense Minister Teodor Melescanu said soldiers who refuse to go in missions outside the country will be discharged, according to a decision adopted after his appointment as minister.

However, a law on the matter was not adopted.

“I firmly decided that deployments include military units as a whole, as they are established in Romania, from generals to cooks. I decided that we give up the system under which people with different units were allowed to choose, as this practice raised a lot of questions,” Melescanu said at the time.

“Now everyone is compelled to leave. If someone does not leave, my order is that they are removed from the military. When you choose a military career, you choose it for good and for worse,” Melescanu added.
