Romanian Olympic Champion Catalina Ponor Officially Announced Her Withdrawal

The triple Olympic champion from Athens, Romanian gymnast Catalina Ponor, 20, announced her official withdrawal from gymnastics following certain health problems, said Adrian Stoica, president of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

“I spoke on the phone with Ponor and she told me about her decision to withdraw,” Stoica said.

He said it is hard to say what Ponor will do in the future. “Life goes on. She will finish college and plan her life. It is hard to say what she wishes to do next.”

Ponor is triple Olympic Champion at Athens in 2004, at balance beam, floor exercise and with the team, has five European titles, of which three in Amsterdam in 2004 (balance beam, floor exercise and with the team) one in  Debrecen in 2005 (balance beam) and another in Volos in 2006 (balance beam). Ponor also won a silver medal with the team and a bronze one at the floor exercise at the European Championships in 2006, in Volos. She won three silver medals at the World Championships in Anaheim in 2003 and two of bronze at the World Championship in Melbourne in 2005 (balance beam) and in Stuttgart in 2007 (with the team).
