Romanian Opposition Social Democrats Submit Simple Motion On Military Pension In Senate

Senators rejected Wednesday several amendments to the country's new draft pension law, among which an amendment submitted by a group of social democrat lawmakers that targeted to eliminate a provision whereby the new pension law for the public sector upholds pension rights of retired officers, retired police officers and public servants with special status in the penitentiary administration system and in the sector of defense, public order and national security, who benefit from monthly law-regulated aid from state budget funds.

Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana said Wednesday that social democrats' simple motion on military pensions will be debated in the Senate's plenary meeting on Monday, May 3.

Geoana stressed that, under the Senate's Regulation, the motion must be debated upon in the Senate within six days from submission.

Social democrat senator Ioan Toma reminded that the Social Democratic Party wants pensions for retirees in the sector of defense, public order and national security to be regulated under the European Union and NATO standards, namely to be removed from the new public sector pension law.

Social democrat head Victor Ponta said Monday that his party will submit two simple motions, one in the Senate, on the topic of military pensions, and the other one in the Chamber of Deputies, on agriculture.

Ponta also said at the time that his party opposes the Government's plan to recalculate the pensions of military personnel and criticized the Executive for its "duplicity and inconsistency" on the subject.

The social democrat leader stressed the motion on agriculture targets the current crisis caused by new legislation prohibiting the sale of farm products, reduced subsidies and the improper use of EU funds.
