Some 300 people gathered at the head of the painter – the ceremony being attended by his two sons, Matei and Tudor Balasa, as well as his third wife, Alexandra Bamme, people who knew him and celebrities.

Personalities attending the funeral included Romanian culture minister Adrian Iorgulescu and education minister Cristian Adomnitei, as well as actor Florin Zamfirescu.

Iorgulescu brought what he called “the homage of a disposable culture minister.” “The artist goes to that heavenly place ruled by clear skies, painted in Sabin Balasa’s blue. His paintings were extremely dense, with special coloring and imagery. Without a doubt, he is one of the greatest contemporary painters. With him, we lose a tremendous personality withdrawing to this Iasi, which is a place riddled with cultural significance and symbolism,” minister Iorgulescu said.

The ceremony was also attended by painter Dan Hatmanu, fashion designer Irina Schrotter, as well as local politicians, including all democrat and social democrat candidates in local elections. The current Iasi mayor, Gheorghe Nichita handed to Balasa’s sons a commemorative plaque granting Balasa the distinction of “Honorary citizen” of Iasi city.

Around 12:00 local time, the procession started out towards the Eternitatea cemetery, where the funeral took place, carried out by three priests.

Sabin Balasa passed away Tuesday, at the Sfanta Maria hospital in Bucharest, as he was paralyzed from the waist down because of general cancer.

Coroners performed, Thursday, an autopsy on the painter and took a series of samples for a complex biological and toxicological investigation, in order to rule out suspicions on the causes of death. The result of the autopsy will be announced at the end of the month.
