Romanian Police Caught Four Suspects In Border Police Officer Murder Case

Bucharest Police Department spokesman Christian Ciocan told MEDIAFAX that the man was caught after crossing the Romanian border into Hungary. The suspect was apprehended by Hungarian police officers who "responded swiftly" to the Romanian Interior Ministry's request. Ciocan said the fifth man is a 19 year old named Gheorghe Breazu and that he is the main suspect in this case.

Cenad Custom point officials said Breazu is to be brought to Romania and handed over to the case prosecutor, who is in Sannicolau Mare, and later transferred to the Timis County Prosecutor.

Earlier, Public order Department head Dan Valentin Fatuloiu announced that four suspects had been detained and would be handed over to the Timis County Prosecutor's Office.

"The perpetrators have been identified. There are five, four have been detained and the fifth is sought as we speak," Fatuloiu said.

According to Fatuloiu, the hypothesis put together Saturday morning by investigators, whereby the border police officer chased a group of car thieves and attempted to apprehend them, is correct. The officer was outnumbered and killed, Fatuloiu said.

The four suspects will be handed over to the Prosecutor's Office and recommended to be put in preventive custody.

Tiberiu Sarbu, an officer of the Romanian border police post in the western town of Sannicolau Mare was found dead Friday night outside a service station, possibly having been shot with his own weapon, investigators said.

He was 38 years old, was married and had a child. He had worked in the TImis Border Police since 2001 and had been a gendarme previously. Christian Ciocan said the Timis County Police Inspectorate decided Saturday to promote Sarbu to the rank of deputy inspector.
