Romanian President Traian Basescu said Thursday, at the Supreme Defense Council meeting, that the Interior Ministry must crack down harder on gang violence and organized crime and show zero tolerance to law violation and in situations affecting the dignity and integrity of ministry personnel.

Romanian President Calls On Interior Ministry To Crack Down Harder On Crime

The presidential office said in a press release Thursday that the National Strategy for Public Order, which sets major objectives on public order, on the medium term, was among topics on the meeting's agenda. The meeting set as priority in the field of public order, for the 2010-2013 interval, the measures aimed at fighting crime, especially organized and trans-border crime, and terrorism.

The Supreme Defense Council is an autonomous administrative body tasked, under the Constitution, with coordinating matters of national security.

Council members include the ministers of defense, interior, foreign affairs, justice, economy, public finance, the head of the Romanian Intelligence Service, the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Chief of General Staff and the presidential adviser on national security.
