"The first element of the partnership between Gazprom and Romgaz is the setup of a joint venture to build gas storage facilities and the perspective of producing electricity," Videanu said during the Europe-Russia economic forum.

He added that the development of economic relations with Russia is a priority for Romania, as Romania represents a stability factor in the rergion from the point of view of energy, as shown during the January gas crisis.

In addition, Romania plans to develop a strategic energy partnership with Russia.

"We hope to stimulate strategic investors’ interest in Romania’s potential, as the country has a high potential on the renewable power sector. During the next period, we will initiate investments in hydropower plants, with both European Union and Russian investors. We have already received requests from private investors to build 18,000-MW power plants using Romania’s renewable energy potential," Videanu added.

Besides energy, Romania still has an insufficiently developed potential in the chemical industry, agriculture and the iron-and-steel sector, he said.

Last week, Videanu met Gazprom’s representatives and Russia’s Ministers of Energy and Education in Moscow to analyze the development of the two countries’ collaboration projects within the energy field and the steps necessary to implement the respective projects.
