According to the bill, drafted by democrat liberal senator Dumitru Florian Staicu, the green dot will be applied to healthy food products that can be consumed daily, the orange dot will be applied to products that must be consumed moderately and the red dot will be an indicator of substances and food additives that can have negative health effects.
The Health Ministry will set the criteria based upon which food products will be applied the respective dots. The main criteria are the type and the amount of additives food products contain.
A report on the bill will be drawn up the economic committee and will be sent to the Senate for debates.
The Government told the Senate it does not support the bill, as food producers might put pressure on those tasked with assigning products to a category. The Government also said the measure will affect the free movement of goods in the European Union and will impact local food producers.
