Romanian Social Democrats Ask VP To Run For Bucharest Mayor, VP Declines

They said the offer to Diaconescu was driven by the party leaders’ failure to convince fellow social democrat Sorin Oprescu not to run for Bucharest mayor independently.

Party leaders decided Thursday in a meeting that Bucharest branch leader Marian Vanghelie would announce in the meeting of the executive committee Friday that the Bucharest organization backs Miron Mitrea for the race, people within the party told MEDIAFAX.

However, Mitrea later said he is considering not to run for mayor, as Oprescu is intent on joining the race.

Social democrat leader Mircea Geoana, along with Miron Mitrea, Viorel Hrebenciuc and Marian Vanghelie tried Thursday evening to persuade Oprescu not to run independently, but failed, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX.
