Romanian Social Democrats To Back No-Confidence Motion Against Fmr Coalition Partners

Romania’s Social Democratic Party, which left the country’s coalition government last week and switched to opposition, decided Monday to back a no-confidence motion to oust the all-democrat liberal government which now lacks Parliament majority.

Social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said his party will vote to oust the government, which he said is now functioning illegally because its structure has changed.

Geoana also said he wants a no-confidence vote in Parliament to stop the government's actions to rid local administration of social democrats and prevent the democrat liberals' "election rigging plan".

Social democrats left the center-left coalition government last week after President Traian Basescu endorsed the prime minister's decision to sack the social democrat interior minister, and left the democrat liberals with a minority government.

Democrat liberals ministers have taken interim seats to fill the ministries left vacant by social democrats. Under the Constitution, the government can function with interims for 45 days, unless the government is dismissed through a no-confidence vote in Parliament.
