Romanian Transport Min Blasts Airport Construction Ordinance

"The question is not whether to build an airport in Brasov, but how big this airport would be. I think the best site would be the current piece of land, where there is an airfield and on which we can build a 1,200 meter long takeoff – landing strip and perhaps we could buy another two – three hectares so that the strip can be 1,500 – 1,800 meters long, which is more than enough for any type of plane to land there," Berceanu said.

According to the minister, since Brasov is so close to Sibiu and Targu Mures, localities that have airports, the Brasov airport would practically serve three counties, Brasov, Harghita and Covasna, which, in his opinion, "don’t have more than one million inhabitants."

Berceanu added that in the literature submitted by local authorities, the yearly estimated number of passengers is 1.2 million.

"I can’t see from where," the minister said.

"This is probably a real estate deal, I saw there are all sorts of mix-ups. The literature also reads «back-up land», I don’t understand why they need 130 hectares as back-up. Back-up for what, for harsh times when we are no longer president of the County Council? This is my belief, if there is someone who can prove me wrong with facts, then I will admit my mistake," Berceanu said.

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies interrupted works Wednesday when the social democrats and democrat liberals failed to agree on an emergency ordinance that transferred a piece of property for the construction of the Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport.

The Emergency Ordinance was issued by the previous government and it states the transfer of a piece of property from the administration of the Brasov Potato And Beet Research And Development Institute to the Brasov County Council, for the achievement of objective "International Airport Brasov-Ghimbav".
