Romanian Transporters Say Hungarian Road Control Bodies Fine Them Illegally

"Under the pretext of ordinary checkups targeting road traffic, Hungarian road control bodies abuse their authority, especially as far as Romanian transporters are concerned (...) One can actually say that Hungary obtains funds by extorting Romanian transporters, through illegal fines that are two up to four times higher, or fines applied based on no legal grounds whatsoever (trucks are blocked until fines are paid)," the union said in a press release.

According to the union, Hungarian authorities suggest that all those who feel they have been wronged or abused should appeal in court the respective fines, which, they said, range from EUR800 to EUR2,000, in most cases.

In the summer of 2009, other two Romanian transporters' associations complained about the Hungarian authorities' "abuse" toward Romanian truck drivers.

In April 2008, over 250 Romanian transporters set their trucks in motion and blocked access on the beltway of Romania's western city of Arad, near the border with Hungary, to raise attention on the problems they face in the neighboring country.
